Make Your Dorm Room Feel Like Yours
Let's be honest, most dorm rooms don't start out looking great. Cinderblock walls, a mattress someone else slept on last year, and a window that lets in either too much light or none at all. The good news is that it doesn't take much to turn that blank box into a space you actually like coming back to.
Our Back to College collection brings together everything that helps: comfortable bedding, mattress protection, curtains, wall art, throws and a few small upgrades that make a big difference in a tiny room.
Build the Perfect Dorm Bed, Layer by Layer
Your bed is going to be your couch, your desk and your study spot, so it's worth getting right. Here's how to build it from the bottom up.
Layer 1: Protect the Mattress
Dorm mattresses have usually been around for a while. A waterproof mattress pad adds a clean barrier between you and whatever came before, plus a layer of softness. Our Cloud Soft overfilled mattress pad is plush, hypoallergenic and waterproof, which covers pretty much every concern.
Layer 2: Sheets You'll Want to Sleep In
Cotton sheets are breathable and easy to wash, which matters when you're doing laundry in a shared machine. Peached percale sheets are a popular pick because they feel soft from the first night. Pro tip: buy two sets so you're never stuck waiting on the dryer.
Layer 3: The Comforter or Duvet
This is where your style comes in. A comforter set gives you an instant pulled-together look, while a duvet set is great if you want to swap the cover for a new style later without replacing the whole thing. Overfilled comforters are a good call if your dorm runs cold in winter.
Layer 4: Pillows and Protectors
Pillow protectors keep your pillows fresher for longer. If you tend to sleep hot or like something to lean on while studying, a cooling full body pillow does double duty as a backrest.
Layer 5: A Throw for Everything Else
A throw blanket is the most-used thing in any dorm. Use it for movie nights, chilly lecture halls, late study sessions or just making the bed look finished. A breathable cooling blanket is nice for early fall, and a faux fur throw is perfect once it gets cold.
Beyond the Bed
Windows
Dorm blinds rarely block much light. Privacy or thermal-lined curtains help you sleep in, keep drafts out and add color to the room. Check whether your room has a curtain rod first, or plan on a tension rod.
Walls
Wall art sets are an easy way to cover plain walls and make the room feel personal. A decorative mirror also helps a small space feel bigger and brighter.
Floor
A soft area rug makes cold dorm floors much more comfortable and helps define your side of the room.
Storage
In a dorm, every inch counts. Look for pieces that hide clutter or add shelf space without taking over the room.
Small Space, Big Style: A Few Dorm Tips
Stick to a simple color palette of two or three shades so the room looks calm instead of cluttered. Coordinate with your roommate before move-in day if you want your sides to match, or at least not clash. Use your bed as the anchor of the room, since it's the biggest thing in it. And don't overbuy. Start with the bed, curtains and one or two décor pieces, then add more once you know how you actually use the space.
Dorm Shopping FAQs
Q: What size bedding do dorm beds need?
A: Most college dorms use Twin XL mattresses, which are about 5 inches longer than a standard Twin. Check with your school's housing office to confirm before you buy.
Q: Will regular Twin sheets fit a Twin XL bed?
A: Twin comforters usually work fine on a Twin XL, but fitted sheets need to match the mattress length. Look for sheets labeled Twin XL or Twin/Twin XL so they stay put.
Q: Do I really need a mattress pad for a dorm bed?
A: It's one of the best things you can buy. A mattress pad adds comfort to a thin dorm mattress, and a waterproof one protects against spills and keeps things more hygienic.
Q: Comforter or duvet: which is better for college?
A: Both work. A comforter set is simpler and ready to use. A duvet cover is easier to wash and lets you change your look later without buying a whole new comforter.
Q: How can I hang wall art in a dorm?
A: Many dorms don't allow nails, so check your housing rules first. Lighter pieces can often be hung with removable adhesive hooks or strips, while heavier framed art may be better leaned on a desk or shelf.
Q: How many sheet sets should I bring to college?
A: Two is ideal. That way you always have a clean set ready while the other is in the wash.
